മധ്യപൂർവദേശം എന്ന പദം ഒരു യൂറോപ്യൻ ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രവീക്ഷണത്തിന്റെ ഫലമായുണ്ടായതാണ്‌. 1850കളിൽ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഇന്ത്യ ഓഫീസിൽനിന്നാവണം ഈ പദം ഉദ്ഭവിച്ചത്. [1] അമേരിക്കൻ നാവികതന്ത്രജ്ഞനായിരുന്ന ആല്ഫ്രഡ് തയെർ മഹൻ പ്രസ്തുത പദം ഉപയോഗിച്ചപ്പോൾ മുതലാണ്‌ ഈ പദത്തിനു പ്രചാരം ലഭിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങിയത്.[2] അക്കാലത്ത് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സാമ്രാജ്യവും റഷ്യൻ സാമ്രാജ്യവും മദ്ധ്യേഷ്യൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ തങ്ങളുടെ സ്വാധീനം വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കാൻ മത്സരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന കാലമായിരുന്നു. മഹൻ ഈ പ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ മാത്രമല്ല ഈ പ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ കേന്ദ്രമായ പേർഷ്യൻ ഗൾഫ് പ്രദേശത്തിന്റെയും തന്ത്രപ്രാധാന്യം മനസ്സിലാക്കിയിരുന്നു.[3][4] സൂയസ് കനാൽ കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ഇന്ത്യയിലേയ്ക്കുള്ള റഷ്യൻ മുന്നേറ്റം തടയാനായി സ്വാധീനത്തിലാക്കേണ്ട തന്ത്രപ്രധാനമായ പാത പേർഷ്യൻ ഗൾഫിനു ചുറ്റുമുള്ള, മിഡിൽ ഈസ്റ്റ് എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ച, പ്രദേശങ്ങളാണെന്ന് പറയുകയുണ്ടായി. [5] മഹൻ ആദ്യമായി ഈ പദം ഉപയോഗിച്ചത് 1902 സെപ്റ്റംബറിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച ഒരു ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ജർണലായ നാഷണൽ റിവ്യൂവിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ The Persian Gulf and International Relations എന്ന പ്രബന്ധത്തിലാണ്‌.[6]
