Commander-in-Chief was the title held by a person who exercised supreme control over a military force, typically reserved for a Head of State of a government. During the Clone Wars, Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine was the commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic.[1] The Kaleesh General Grievous held the title of Supreme Martial Commander and, therefore, acted as commander-in-chief of the Separatist Droid Armies during the Clone Wars.[2]

During the Imperial Era within the Alliance to Restore the Republic, it was Chancellor Mon Mothma who held that title.[3] Recognized as a military commander[5] even before being ultimately elevated to the position of supreme commander of the Imperial fleet,[6] the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader acted as the de facto commander-in-chief of the Imperial Armed Forces[4] due to being empowered by the Emperor.[7]
