Critics Consensus

Dealing with thorny family dynamics while remaining warm as a throw blanket, His Three Daughters is a compelling showcase for Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen, and Carrie Coon.

Dana Stevens Slate His Three Daughters stars three great actresses and one hell of an ending. Sep 21, 2024 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) The storytelling is never schematic. The divide between the three women, and the uncertain bridging, feels lodged in the granular. That makes for an actor’s showcase, and all three leads deliver exceptional performances that are linked. Sep 20, 2024 Full Review Don Shanahan Film Obsessive What makes this raw outpouring of emotions tangible are the pointed performances of the three extremely talented actresses brought together for this clash. Steven C Although it's a little "stagey" (felt like I was watching a play), the acting is top-notch and it's well-written. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review Terri Despite reviews citing the great acting, I thought Carrie Coons and Elizabeth Olsen were so obviously acting throughout (and I like both those actresses). I thought the ending was weird and unclear and while some truths about a death vigil were accurately portrayed, the hospice guy was an obvious foil but all in all, very little comedy. if the ending was going to use the dad in that way, the monologue could have been much better. Sadly, did not love. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/13/24 Full Review PAUL Fischer Absolutely stunning film poignant at times dryly amusing performances by all three actresses. A film about sisterhood, death and life. One of the best films of the year. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/09/24 Full Review Marlene May Superbly acted and poignantly written, this movie feels like its captured the real life difficulty of coming to terms with a dying parent as experienced by battling siblings with widely different approaches to life and their fathers impending death. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review Linda B The characters interaction was excellent.. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/08/24 Full Review hailey I loved it! Amazing performances! Synopsis From writer-director Azazel Jacobs (French Exit, The Lovers) comes this bittersweet and often funny story of an elderly patriarch and the three grown daughters who come to be with him in his final days. Katie (Carrie Coon) is a controlling Brooklyn mother dealing with a wayward teenage daughter; free-spirited Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) is a different kind of mom, separated from her offspring for the first time; and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) is a sports-betting stoner who has never left her father's apartment -- much to the chagrin of her stepsisters, who share a different mother and worldview. Continuing his astute exploration of family dynamics in close-knit spaces, Jacobs follows the siblings over the course of three volatile days, as death looms, grievances erupt, and love seeps through the cracks of a fractured home.
